Trace Register has been building its customer base as retailers are demanding traceability software, not just for upstream sustainability reasons but also to combat food waste.

After running a four-boat fishing company, CEO Phil Werdal started the Seattle-based traceability software company in 2005 as retailers were embarking on ambitions sustainability programs for the seafood they were selling.

It counts Wegman’s, Whole Foods and Costco among the more than 2,000 users —which also include harvesters and other supply chain partners — of its software in 24 nations.

In addition to traceability systems’ potential to help combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and fraud, traceability can help retailers lessen food waste.
