The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) established the prestigious Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program to address concerns about the safety, environmental impact, and labor practices of the global aquaculture industry. Since its launch, the BAP program has become the preeminent aquaculture certification program worldwide. The BAP program is administered for GAA by the independent, non-profit Aquaculture Certification Council (ACC). The ACC understood the need for end-to-end supply chain traceability to assure the integrity of the BAP certification program. After an in-depth review, ACC selected the Trace Register™ system as the mandated chain traceability system for the BAP certification program. The Trace Register™ system was selected because it was easy to implement and use, deemed cost effective, and considered flexible enough to be used by the smallest farm to the largest global enterprise. The central database (register) of the Trace Register™ system also offers ACC the ability to undertake comprehensive trend analysis and risk management reporting.
Trident Seafoods partnered with the Russian company Gidrostroy to market and sell Alaska pollock from Russian waters. Trident recognized that concern about illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing could impact sales, particularly in Europe. To certify the legal origin and traceability of the fish, Trident set up full traceability using the Trace Register™ system. The product is marketed under the trademark, ”Russian CertiFish,” and meets the requirements of European and other buyers for full traceability. Trace Register is providing Trident customers with web-based visibility of the Russian CertiFish supply chain and access to important documentation all the way from vessel offload to final distribution.
